My Story

What if I told you I battled Sibo for 10yrs. I spent thousands of dollars on test and medications that didn’t work.  The reason I had sibo was because I had parasites!! Parasites that slowed and impaired my small intestines  creating an environment for bacteria, yeast and God only knows what else to overgrow. Parasites are very difficult to detect. You may have been tested for them already and had negative  results right. That is because parasites aren’t hanging out in your stool like bacteria do. They adhere to your intestinal lining or even worse in your organs. You have 22 feet of intestines so finding a microscopic parasite or egg is like looking for a needle in a haystack.  I sent stool studies off twice a year x 10yrs. The results were always negative for parasites but plenty of pathogenic bacteria were found.  I thought about going to another country for testing at one point. In some countries they test your blood for antigens against parasites not your stool. That made sense to me. One drop of blood tells much more about your health than one drop of stool.  I had done all the newest and greatest test, GI mapping, complete stool analysis with the best labs. The problem is that these labs could only find bacteria, they literally always said negative for any parasites they tested for. A negative result that is false is horrible because you then go in a completely different direction, the wrong direction by the way.  Countless times I took antibiotics or herbals for these bacterial over growths and sibo. I felt no better each time. I spent $1500 for rifaximin. Complete waste of money for me. I actually got more relief from the herbals but as soon as I would stop them all my symptoms would come back or sometimes they would quit working and I would have to find something else. My food sensitivities were increasing too making it difficult to find herbals blends. I couldn’t tolerate any garlic at all. My stomach was like raw hamburger so what I call hot herbs because they made my stomach burn.  Things like berberine, turmeric, set me on fire.  I was so discouraged. I looked pregnant all the time, I was miserable.  I knew this all started after an episode of food poisoning, and I knew that I felt best when I was taking antiparasitics like wormwood or black walnut. I would take these items when my herbal combinations quit working. I didn’t know I had parasites or I would have kept taking them. Remember I had test results that said no parasites just bacteria. I spent good money on those test. Around $350 per test twice a year x 10yrs.  That totals $7000 just on stool tests alone.   Now over the years I had tried natural parasite cleanses and did feel better while taking them but as soon as I would complete the course all my symptoms would come back. I didn’t know at that time  how virulent parasites can be and that it can takes months to get rid of them.  So many times I suspected that I had a parasite. I mean this all started after an episode of food poisoning, with sushi!! So I’m searching the internet for a parasite expert then this lab pops up. Parasitology Center in Scottsdale, AZ. Parasitology Center tests stool and urine for parasites. That’s right you can and probably do have parasites in your urine. Cystitis anyone?  I didn’t even know you could have parasites in your bladder but there again those sneaky things can go every where. It made sense to me that finding a parasite in your bladder should be easier than finding one in your stool. After all the bladder is much smaller than 22 feet of intestines.   Sure enough they found a parasite in my bladder a nematode . They found Cryptosporidan in my stool.  So I had to take 2 different medications which I was more than happy to do.  What I can tell  you is after taking them I could tolerate more foods. This was life changing! I could even eat garlic again!!    My bloating after meals decreased greatly! I still had some bloating but I attributed that to left over bacteria. Parasites harbor bacteria and viruses so you really can’t clear those until you clear the parasites. Otherwise the parasites will re-inoculate you with the very pathogens your trying to kill.

Now that the parasites are at least in check, I don’t suffer from constipation. Pretty sure my migrating motor complex is working better.

Oh and the whole methylation mutation…….. well sulfur doesn’t bother me anymore. You know it never made sense to me anyway that this methylation problem was supposedly genetic and yet I never had any issues until I had battled sibo for years. I didn’t even develop this issue until a few years after I was diagnosed with sibo which is really you have a parasite that no one has found that is causing sibo. Sibo in my opinion is a symptom not an illness of it’s own.  My advise is to only use Parasitology Center and test both urine and stool. I would probably take pumpkin seed capsules or mimosa pudica to make those sneaky critters easier to find in the stool.  As long as they are happy and tucked away there harder to detect. That is just a theory but might be worth a try.

Food for thought for those of you who have been treated for blaso cystis hominus and your symptoms haven’ improved  metrondizole is only effective 40% of the time. New studies show Bactrim or albendazole as being more effective. Hmmmm…… Is that why some sibo sufferers improve after taking Bactrim? Is there a parasistic infection that is causing the root problem. For me the answer to that was YES!!!

New Chapter

But wait Ms. Sally! Dr.  Allison Siebecker,  Dr. David Perlmutter , and all the other sibo experts would have figured out if parasites were really the cause of sibo. Well….. they are experts and they are brilliant however they all have one huge problem in common. They are limited to American labs. Unfortunately in the states you can not test the blood for parasites without getting permission from the CDC. The gold standard for testing in the U. S. is stool. Once again you may not find parasites in the stool. Even if these brilliant doctors suspected parasites they can’t prove it with test. Doctors need to prove things, they have too otherwise it’s quackery. They have been taught that parasites are rare in a first world country. That misconception is reinforced by official labs that have False negative results. Another thing health care professionals are taught is that when a person has a parasitic infection you will see an elevation in their eosinophils.  I never had elevated eosinophils. I wonder if perhaps elevated eosinophils would be a late finding or just not relevant at all.  Let me mention once again I have never left the country.

New chapter

Let’s talk about how easy it is to catch a parasite. First of all, they are pretty much everywhere. Don’t let that scare you. Do let it motivate you to do frequent parasite cleanses though. Parasites are on our fruits and vegetables. We all expect them in undercooked meats but fruits and vegetables is more of a surprise. Parasites  hangout on plants waiting to be eaten by a potential host.   I remember when I was growing up we had apple trees in our back yard. My mom taught us to search  them for worm holes before we ate them. Now I wonder how many worms were too small for the naked eye to see. Yes there were visible worms in the apples, I don’t think those are the type that can live in humans. Most of the ones we humans contract are too small to see without a microscope. Still there are some parasites that hangout on plants waiting to be eaten by a potential host.

Some countries start treating there citizens for them at age one.  They just figure you will  get a parasite so it’s better to keep the number of parasites down and in check.  You can also catch a parasite just by walking along the beach without any shoes on…… Chlorine doesn’t kill some of them so swimming pools can be a source of infection. Your puppy that goes outside and licks something that has droppings from a rodent and then licks you on the face….. get it.   I thinks it’s impossible to avoid parasites. Thankfully we can take reasonable measures and then cleanse regularly.

Chronic Cystitis:

I had a parasite in my bladder….disturbing! Guess what after I took medication for it, albendazole, I no longer have symptoms of cystitis. I don’t leak a little urine when I laugh or cough. I can hold my bladder for a very long time now.
